This hands-on workshop covers the core principles of permaculture design, food forest layering, and how trees, shrubs, and ground cover can work together to create a self-sustaining edible landscape. Participants will plant a tree in the community garden as part of Springfield's National Tree Day contribution.

Permaculture Principles
Introduction to the 12 permaculture design principles and how they apply to home gardens and community spaces.
Food Forest Layering
Understanding the seven layers of a food forest — canopy, understory, shrubs, herbs, ground cover, root, and vine.
Hands-On Tree Planting
Participants plant native saplings in the community garden, applying permaculture spacing and companion planting principles.
Design Your Own Backyard
Guided activity where participants sketch a simple permaculture plan for their own yard or balcony.

Open questions with the facilitator and information on local permaculture networks.
